| Description: | The paper deals with Megrelian vocabulary that expresses beliefs related to stockbreeding. These lexical units express several chronological layers of religious beliefs of Megrelian people. It includes pagan as well as christian terms. Christian terms often have pagan meaning. The couple of archangels – მიქამგარიო and ერგე – a god combined with the cult of St. George after the establishment of Christianity were considered to be protectors of stockbreeding. ჟინიში ორთა was a god of breeding and გალენიში ორთა was a god protecting cattle. ისკიოდობა, ბორსობა, მობენება, კაპუნია and თერდობა were the rituals for protecting cattle. |
